Summary: Finding a place for Ivan in the chaos of the day.
Warnings: Definitely horror/nightmare elements, definitely related to 'Hell' as Mary knows it.
Mary is no stranger to dark dreams. They are frequent to her, visions of charred worlds where there is always screaming and there is always pain. It is not so true to call them "bad" dreams, they are nightmares most assuredly but they full her with an unsettling euphoria that makes her stomach tumble. It's the giddiness of suffocation, and sometimes it is a rope she imagines around her throat, that she is hanging like a ragdoll; all soft parts and wool for hair, dead eyes, painted on mouth. Sometimes it is leather and steel she imagines, a collar made of flesh that glitters in darkness, that jangles when unseen hands pull and drag her across a gleaming glass-shard floor.
The suffocation does not cut off her joyful screaming, her warbling, her singing,
Here and yonder, to and fro, the foxes hide the sinner's bones...
She wakes at midnight, sweating in the terrible humidity, and humming another of her dreadful tunes deliriously, the sound of it vibrating in her teeth, making her skin feel too tight and too sensitive. She lies on her back staring at the sloped ceiling for a long time before she realizes that she hears others moving throughout the house. Not just one or two, but many, and she throws her legs over the side of the bed, listening. What could they be up to at such a devilish hour? All good souls should be tucked tight into their beds.
She grabs something to cover herself with and leaves her room, heading down the stairs to see what there is to see beneath the pale moonlight.
