While ivan still isn't sure what to think of Ivan, he decided a while ago, somewhere halfway through the trip, that he would take a leap of faith with him. His mother treated him nicely most of the time, so surely his father would, too? He'd still be on his best behaviour and all that; but he would trust him to be nice to him; things like assuming that Timo would not trick him are a part of that.
